Newspapers Review: Israeli Measures against Lawmakers Dominate Dailies

RAMALLAH, January 25, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Wednesday highlighted Israeli measures against arrested Palestinian lawmakers.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that an Israeli court in Jerusalem extended the arrest of lawmaker Mohammad Totah and former cabinet minister Khaled Abu Arafeh till Sunday, while a military court in Ofer camp ordered Palestinian parliament speaker from Hamas, Aziz Dweik, held for six months in administrative detention without trial or charge.

The newspaper’s main headline also said that Israeli authorities arrested another Palestinian lawmaker Abdul Jabbar Fuqaha on Tuesday. Meanwhile, a Palestinian man died of wounds sustained by an Israeli raid on Gaza in 2002.

Al-Ayyam featured on its front page the situation in Syria, reporting that 64 people were killed on Tuesday and that the government has agreed to extend the Arab League observers mission.

The daily printed a picture of the damage caused by the Syrian army attacks in Homs.

Al-Quds featured the European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton’s visit to the Palestinian Territory and her meeting with Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. The headline said Ashton hoped to bring the Palestinians and Israelis back to the negotiations table.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted a humanitarian story of a Palestinian woman, 21, whose father had locked up in the bathroom for 10 years.

Al-Quds editorial condemned Israeli accusations made against the Mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, alleging that he incited against Jews. The daily said the Israeli targeting of Palestinian men of religion contradicts with Israeli claims of freedom of religion.
