Newspapers Review: Abbas’ Interview with Russian TV Dominates Dailies

RAMALLAH, January 23, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Monday focused on an interview President Mahmoud Abbas gave to Russia Today news channel during his visit to Russia. The interview was broadcast on Sunday.

Al-Quds prime headline quoted Abbas saying “It is our right to launch a diplomatic campaign to isolate Israel’s policy and settlements.”

The daily also quoted Abbas stressing that the 21-points proposal submitted by the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the exploratory meetings held in Jordan was “void and worthless.”

Al-Quds printed a picture of Abbas during his meeting with the chief of the Council of Russian Muftis, Sheikh Rawi Ayn Al-Din.

Al-Ayyam featured on its front page an Arab initiative calling to peacefully end the Syrian regime’s rule and establish a national unity government within two months.

Al-Quds newspaper featured inside reports from Hamas movement stressing that the movement intends to keep its head office outside the Palestinian Territory.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida printed a picture of Fatah student representatives in Bethlehem University in a press conference addressing the rising financial crisis. Below the picture, the daily reported that the crisis in Birzeit University has ended whereas the situation in Bethlehem escalated as 30 students went on hunger strike against the university administration’s refusal to meet their demands.

Al-Quds editorial tackled Abbas’ interview with Russia Today, particularly when he described Netanyahu’s proposal as “gibberish.”

The daily praised Abbas’ diplomatic-political European tour and called on the international community and the United Nations to uphold their responsibilities towards the Palestinians.
