Efforts Continue to End Birzeit University Crisis, says Lawmaker

RAMALLAH, January 21, 2012 (WAFA) – Lawmaker Bassam Salhi said Saturday that mediation efforts to end a crisis at Birzeit University that forced the administration to shut down campus will continue until they succeed to bring life to the university back to normal.

Salhi, along with lawmaker Walid Assaf, have been mediating between the students and the administration to end the crisis that started after a group of students took over the main administration building last week in a protest move against university failure to address issues of tuition payment for several hundred students.

Salhi told Voice of Palestine radio that his initiative demands immediate return to dialogue between the university administration and the student council from the point it has ended before the eruption of the crisis.

“As soon as we start the talks, the protesters inside the university will end their strike and the university will reopen its doors for all students with a guarantee not to take action against those who participated in the protest,” he said.

The administration welcomed Salhi’s call to start a dialogue with the student body insisting that all financial issues will be resolved.
