Newspapers Review: Abbas Meeting Medvedev Dominates Dailies

RAMALLAH, January 21, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Arabic dailies Saturday focused on President Mahmoud Abbas’ meeting with his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, in Moscow on Friday.

Al-Ayyam prime headline reported from Moscow on Abbas meetings with Medvedev and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

The daily said that Abbas briefed Medvedev on the latest political developments and the international Quartet’s efforts to re-launch negotiations and to revive the stalled peace process due to the Israeli intransigence.

The three dailies printed pictures of the Abbas-Medvedev meeting, reporting that Abbas informed Medvedev that the mayor of Jericho decided to name a street in Jericho after him and handed him the naming certificate issued by the mayor.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida main front page story quoted US President Barack Obama saying “Israel’s security is non-negotiable…expected progress in peace process not achieved.”

The news article featured Obama's New York Jewish fundraiser, where he stressed that the US- Israeli military cooperation is at its highest level.

Al-Quds was the only daily to highlight recent reports that the Israeli municipality of Jerusalem flies a helicopter above East Jerusalem every three weeks to monitor any “unpermitted Arab construction” in the occupied city.

The daily reported in separate news that the Israeli municipality approved the building of 32 housing units and office buildings in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Ras al-Amoud.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida focused on the presidential condemnation of the Israeli arrest of Hamas lawmaker Aziz Dweik, accusing Israel of attempting to hinder the internal reconciliation.

Al-Quds editorial praised Abbas’ Europe tour, particularly his visit to Russia, indicating the importance of Palestinian international efforts as the deadline set by the Quartet to bring back the Palestinians and Israelis to the negotiation table approaches.

The daily called on the international community to implement the international resolutions regarding the Palestinian cause and help end the Israeli occupation and establish an independent Palestinian state.
