RAMALLAH, January 16, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Monday focused on the meeting of one of the reconciliation agreement committees that discussed restructuring the PLO.
They said the committee members agreed on the number and geographical allocation of the members of Palestinian National Council (PNC), the Palestinian parliament in exile.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said in its top front page article that the committee agreed that the new PNC will consist of 350 members – 150 from the Palestinian Territory and 200 from the Diaspora.
However, a member of the commission told Voice of Palestine radio on Monday that the meeting was only a brainstorming session and that no decisions were made so far. He said the committee will meet again within two weeks to further discuss issues raised in the Sunday meeting held in Jordan, including the number and geographic distribution of the PNC members.
Al-Ayyam highlighted the death of 32 Syrian civilians at the hands of government troops amid United Nations calls on President Bashar al-Assad to stop killing his own people.
Al-Quds daily reported that Assad issued a general amnesty for crimes committed during the ten-month uprising.
Both newspapers published a picture of a Syrian protester holding out a banner saying “We will not back down,” during a demonstration against Assad in the Syrian capital Damascus.
Al-Quds prime headline reported from Jordan on the wide gap between Palestinians and Israelis following three exploratory meetings under the Quartet supervision held in Amman.
The daily quoted a Palestinian official denying reports of a fourth meeting between both sides on January 25.
Al-Quds editorial praised efforts by President Mahmoud Abbas to rally international support, particularly in his current trip that will take him to Britain, Germany and Russia, and called on the international community, particularly the US, Europe and the Quartet, to pressure Israel to end its occupation.
