Newspapers Review: Hamas, Fatah New Agreements in Reconciliation

RAMALLAH, January 15, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused Sunday on Hamas and Fatah agreement to re-open the Central Election Commission headquarters in the Gaza Strip.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on its front page that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh informed Fatah that it can reclaim President Mahmoud Abbas residence in Gaza, after it has been under Hamas control since 2007.

Reports on a youth demonstration in front of the Presidential headquarters in Ramallah against the resumption of the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations in the Jordanian capital Amman, under the supervision of the Quartet, were highlighted in al-Ayyam daily.

It printed a picture of several youth holding out banners that said “negotiations = more settlements, prisoners in jail, juadizing Jerusalem, land seizure.”

Al-Quds was the only newspaper to feature US worries over a potential Israeli military strike against Iran despite US warnings, especially after reports that Israel will close its nuclear reactor later in January.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida’s prime headline quoted an Israeli official saying Israel will submit its proposals on security and borders issues to the Palestinians in March, if the Palestinian-Israeli meetings continue.

Al-Quds editorial criticized the indecisiveness and soft language of the European Union report on the Israeli policy to depopulate area C of its Palestinian residents, as well as criticized the lack of a stern position against Israeli practices.

The daily also slammed Qatar’s recent proposal to send Arab troops to Syria to stop the government’s violent crackdown against opposition protesters, and said the proposal is “unrealistic” and a “prelude of an international intervention.”
