RAMALLAH, January 3, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused Tuesday on Israeli seizure orders of 13 dunums in East Jerusalem.
They also touched on statements by PLO Executive Committee member Saeb Erekat on the Quartet meeting planned for Tuesday in Jordan.
Al-Quds highlighted an Israeli plan to confiscate 13 Palestinian-owned dunums to expand the main street in the industrial zone in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Wadi al-Joz, which would link the Old City to the settlements in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.
The daily’s front page printed an illustrative map of the confiscated land, which will directly affect more than 170 workshops and stores.
Al-Ayyam’s main focus was Erekat’s statements that the Quartet meeting aims to put pressure on the Israeli government to meet its international obligations, including the road map.
Subtitles reported that Palestinian factions, including Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) criticized Palestinian participation in the Quartet meeting.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida was the only daily to highlight President Mahmoud Abbas’ meeting with US peace envoy David Hale, where Abbas stressed his commitment to a serious peace process based on clear foundations and total halt to Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Al-Quds editorial strongly condemned the Israeli seizure orders of land in Wadi al-Joz, and called for action instead of only verbal condemnations against Israeli attempts to Juadize Jerusalem.
The newspaper also stressed public opposition to resumption of negotiations with Israel before it halts settlement activities and takes a clear position on 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as a capital of the Palestinian state.
