Newspapers Review: Dailies Focus on Massacres in Syria

RAMALLAH, August 1, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Arabic dailies Monday focused on the death of 136 Syrian civilians at the hands of the Syrian army under the command of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday.

Al-Ayyam’s prime story reported on the death of 100 Syrians in Hama, a city north of Damascus, in what was called “the second Hama massacre,” the injuries of dozens of Syrians and the arrest of more than 300 people in the countryside in Syrian army raids of different cities.

The newspaper reported on western condemnation of the military operation against Syrian rebels that coincided with the beginning of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting and prayer for Muslims. US President Barack Obama warned that he will cooperate with other countries to isolate al-Assad.

Al-Quds’ front page exclusive story quoted Palestinian officials on a potential meeting between Fatah and Hamas in an attempt to continued the halted reconciliation between the two movements. The officials reiterated that there are no indications of a near solution to form a transitional government to lead presidential and parliamentary elections next May.

The three dailies featured Prime Minister Salam Fayyad’s expectations of full-salary payments to public employees on Tuesday, for the month of July.
