Newspapers Review: Ramadan to Begin on Monday

RAMALLAH, July 31, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Arabic dailies’ common headlines announced the beginning of Ramadan on Monday.

Al-Ayyam, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida and Al-Quds' front pages announced the beginning of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting and prayer for Muslims, on Monday, according to the Islamic authorities in the Palestinian Territory.

Al-Quds’ prime story reported that US president Barack Obama will invite President Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian negotiation team to discuss US proposals for the resumption of negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis.

Al-Hayat Al-Jadida’s main headline quoted Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak as saying, “Israel is looking for a peace-talk formula,” after his meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon.

Al-Ayyam's front page reported on the attack on an Egyptian gas pipeline that supplies Israel and Jordan. The newspaper said that 12 Egyptian and Palestinian suspects were arrested on charges of carrying out the attack, which is the fifth one this year.

The three newspapers also reported on the mass protests in Israeli cities against the high cost of living in the country.
