UN Report Holds Israel Responsible for Nakba Day Killings

TEL AVIV, July 6, 2011 (WAFA) – A new report by the United Nations held Israel responsible for killing seven Palestinians who tried to cross over into Israel from the Lebanese border on May 15, the commemoration of Nakba day.

Michael Williams, UN special coordinator for Lebanon who prepared the report, said Israeli soldiers used direct live fire against unarmed demonstrators who did not threaten their lives.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed his concern due to Israel using weapons against unarmed, peaceful demonstrators. The report also noted that Israel violated UN Security Council Resolution 1701 because Israeli soldiers fired at demonstrators outside the blue line (the UN border drawn up between Israel and Lebanon).

Israel was greatly angered by the report, according to Haaretz, and the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs canceled Williams' periodic visit to Israel and decided to cut contact with him until further notice.
