RAMALLAH, June 27, 2011 (WAFA) - Fatah Commissioner for International Relations, Nabil Shaath, Monday said that a committee headed by Secretary of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Yasser Abed Rabo, was formed to follow up United Nations recognition of a Palestinian state next September and seek recognition of 192 countries as well.
“It has two main missions; the first one is to seek recognition of world countries before September and the second is to guarantee our allies’ support in light of Israel’s intensive fight against them,” he added.
He said that the Palestinian leadership is seeking to increase the number of their supporters incase Israel planned to hold the Palestinian Authority’s money again.
Shaath asserted that the committee’s only concern is to protect the Palestinian quest of UN recognition next September.
He said, “Recognizing a Palestinian state is divided into two parts; a bilateral recognition, which reflects the legitimacy of the Palestinian people, land and government, in addition to a multilateral one, which requires the recognition of 192 countries of the world.”
He said that the Palestinians should not assume the worst of America’s stance regarding September, “but if America tried to hamper it, we will still obtain a full membership in the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and International Court of Justice. Palestine will also be accepted as an observer member in the UN General Assembly.”
Shaath expressed hope and optimism regarding September, saying “Israel will not stop us from seeking UN recognition of a Palestinian state and no country will withdraw its recognition.”
He said, regarding the reconciliation and the technocrats government, Salam Fayyad is the most suitable candidate for the new government and President Mahmoud Abbas will not risk the reconciliation and September for anyone.
The committee named a number of known officials such as: Shaath who is going to be responsible of Russia and Europe, as well as Foreign Minister, Riyad al-Maliki, who will head to the African and Asian countries to seek their recognition of a Palestinian state.
