RAMALLAH, June 27, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Arabic dailies Monday focused on the Palestinian leadership meeting, headed by President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah on Sunday.
Al-Ayyam main headline quoted Abbas: “I’m going to Gaza and might surprise everyone; seeking UN.”
The prime story featured the meeting, where Abbas reiterated that he will seek United Nations recognition and full membership of a Palestinian state within 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital, as well as he insisted on going to the Gaza Strip in the light of the reconciliation agreement signed between Fatah and Hamas in Cairo on May 4, 2011.
The three dailies reported that Israeli prison’s administration began to implement Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to aggravate the conditions of prisoners by isolating a number of Hamas members in solitary confinement. Prisoners from Hamas movement in all prisons will have a one-day hunger strike on Monday.
Al-Quds front page highlighted the Israeli razing of more than 100 graves in ‘Ma’man Allah’ historical cemetery in East Jerusalem to build what is called “Tolerance Museum”, a new Israeli court complex, and parking spaces. The paper printed a picture of one of the destroyed graves.
Al-Hayat Al-Jadida and al-Quds reported on Israeli threats of attacking the south Lebanon if the security situation got any worse.
Al-Quds editorial condemned the Israeli razing of over 100 graves in a historical cemetery in Jerusalem, saying “Tolerance is not built on occupation and the remains of the dead.”
The op-editorials in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida discussed the Israeli escalation and aggression on Palestinian prisoners marking the fifth anniversary on capturing the Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit by Hamas.
