JERICO, June 26, 2011 (WAFA)- PLO Executive Committee Member, Saeb Erekat, Sunday said that seeking United Nations recognition of a Palestinian state next September within 1967 boarders doesn’t contradict with the peace process.
He stated that seeking UN recognition will not affect resuming the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations based on two-state solution, Israeli settlement activities cessation within 1967 borders including East Jerusalem.
During a meeting with Deputy Assistant for Secretary of State, Jake Wallace and the US Consul General in Jerusalem, Daniel Rubinstein, Erekat pointed out that the Israeli government has intensified settlements activities especially in East Jerusalem and its surroundings, rejecting the two-state solution.
Wallace said that the US doesn’t support Palestine in seeking UN recognition aiming to resume negotiations based on US President Barack Obama’s speech in May 2011.
Erekat considered the Palestinian reconciliation as the only path to achieve a two-state solution and conduct fair democratic presidential and legislative elections.
