Malki: Going to UN in September a Necessity

RAMALLAH, June 19, 2011 (WAFA) - Palestinian Foreign Affairs Minister, Riad Al-Malki, Sunday  said during a meeting with Sweden's Minister for International Development Cooperation, Gunilla Carlsson, that seeking full UN membership for a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders is a national need and a legal right approved by the entire world.
Malki briefed Carlsson on the latest political developments and the ongoing preparations to seek UN recognition in September of a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders.

He stressed that returning to negotiations with the Israeli side must be based on a specific timeframe, lead to actual results on the ground and be based on US President Barak Obama’s vision: a Palestinian state based on the borders before the 1967 Six-Day war between Israel and a bloc of neighboring Arab states.

He demanded that a clear statement on the recognition of a Palestinian state within 1967 borders be issued at the EU foreign ministers meeting expected to be held in Luxembourg next Monday.

He also called for condemning Israeli unilateral measures, particularly settlement expansion activity in the Palestinian Territory.

Carlsson stressed her country’s supportive position for establishing an independent Palestinian state, praising the PA’s achievements and its fulfilling its commitments to build state institutions.

She expressed her country’s wish to play a positive role in reviving the peace process and resuming negotiations between the PA and Israel.
