Newspapers Review: Dailies Focus on Abbas, Mladenov Meeting?

RAMALLAH, June 19, 2011 (WAFA) – Sunday’s front pages of al-Ayyam, al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Quds dailies focused on President Mahmoud Abbas’ meeting with Nikolay Mladenov, the Bulgarian minister of foreign affairs.

The common headlines quoted Abbas saying “New government agenda to follow president; PLO to handle negotiations,” during his meeting with Mladenov on Saturday in Ramallah. Abbas reiterated that the reconciliation agreement will push the peace process forward.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida’s main front page story featured Israeli Minister of Defense Ehud Barak’s statements that Palestinians should accept settlements as a reality.

Al-Ayyam published an exclusive news piece on an upcoming meeting of the Quartet representatives in Brussels later this month, according to western diplomatic sources.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam’s front page stories featured Prime Minister Salam Fayyad’s call to end the Israeli siege on Gaza and open all border crossings, as well as activate the European role in the peace process.

Al-Ayyam printed a front page picture of a Syrian child in one of the refugee camps along the Turkish borders, featuring in an article below the situation in Syria. Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida also featured the story.

The three dailies reported on the end of the public health employees’ strike.

One al-Ayyam headline quoted Hamas official Ismail Haniyeh: “Palestinian Authority can dispense with western aid and replace it with Arab and Islamic aid.” He said his government receives $25 million every month, which proves an Arab replacement of White House help.

Al-Ayyam editorials addressed the meeting between Abbas and Hamas official Khaled Mashal on Tuesday in Cairo, in which they will agree on a candidate for prime minister and solve issues regarding the new government.

An op-ed in al-Quds tackled the attack by the Mufti of the Sunnis in Lebanon, Mohammad Qabbani, on Palestinian refugees in Lebanon during a meeting with Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) factions in Beirut.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida editorials mourned the late Palestinian poet Yousef Khatib, who passed away on Wednesday.
