Top EU Official Calls for Restraint on Syrian Borders

BRUSSELS, June 6, 2011 (WAFA) – European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton Monday called for restraint on the Syrian borders with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights following Sunday’s bloody incident.

“I regret any loss of life and injuries of civilians from IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) action in the area of separation on the occupied Syrian Golan on Sunday 5 June,” she said in a statement. “It is important that demonstrations be peaceful and the response measured and proportionate.”

Ashton warned that such incident could undermine the long-held cease-fire on the Golan, calling “on all parties to exercise restraint,” and to cease “provocative actions like this.”

“The events of 5 June and 15 May emphasize the urgency to resume peace negotiations for a comprehensive and sustainable resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict. The EU stands ready to do everything possible to help all parties choose the path of peace and engage in successful negotiations,” she said.
