Palestine Seeks Observer Status in the WTO

RAMALLAH, June 6, 2011 (WAFA) – The ministry of economy’s technical support advisory team for membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO) Monday held a second meeting in Ramallah to continue preparation for Palestine’s admission as an observer in the WTO.

Minister of Economy Hasan Abu Libdeh, who chaired the meeting, urged members of the advisory team to exert every effort possible to conclude their work before the next WTO meeting with a hope Palestine will be ready to  receive at least an observer status if not full membership.

He stressed the importance of getting an observer status in WTO because that will benefit efforts to build the future State of Palestine and will incorporate Palestine into the global economy.

The Palestinian Authority has been seeking membership in the WTO since 2009. It tried again in 2010 and hopes to be ready for a new attempt this year.
