Brazil Funds Building Fish Ponds in Nablus

NABLUS, March 7, 2011 (WAFA) – The Ministry of Agricultural Monday signed an agreement with Nablus area farmers to establish fish ponds funded by the Brazilian government.

Six farmers will benefit from the project, which will establish a pond with an area of 110 square meters per farmer, according to Mohammed Fatayer, head of the ministry’s Nablus agriculture department.

The project aims to provide Nablus with fresh fish, which the city lacks due to its inland geography. It is supposed to fill the shortage in fish availability in Nablus.

Beneficiary farmers were chosen who have 10 or more dunums of land suitable for agriculture and with sources of electricity and irrigation so that water used in the pond will also be used to water agriculture.

The farmers will be trained on the project and followed-up for a period of five years, according to Samer Hanani, coordinator of the Brazilian project in Nablus.
