Al Arabiya Channel Holds Hamas Government Responsible of the Attack in Gaza


GAZA, January 23, 2007, (WAFA)- Hundreds of Palestinian journalists, participated in Gaza in a set in organised by Syndicate of Palestinian Journalists protesting the attack against Al Arabiya Satellite Channel last night.

Representatives of NGO's, civil society organisations and political powers participated in the set in next the PLC compound.

They chanted slogans and delivered states denouncing the attack against Alarabiya and the "war against the freedom of expression."

Riham Abdulkarim, Bureau Chief of Al Arabiya in Gaza, held the Government of Hamas responsible of the explosion against Alarabia.

She asserted that PM Haniyya and Minister of Interior, Said Siam, knew that we were under threat.

Abdul Karim affirmed that the crew of Al Arabiya briefed the Siam about all details of threats and he promised that the Alarabiya bureau would never be attacked and he asserted that the misunderstanding (with Hamas) would be settled without weapon.

She said that Al Arabiya tried to settle the issue with Hamas "peacefully" but they found no open ears.

Abdul Karim said that the campaign of provocation, launched by Hamas and the Government is the main cause lead to the attack.

Saleem Al Hindi 27, journalist at Voice of Labours, told WAFA that the attack against Alarabiya is an "organized crime". He asserted that such crime would strongly affect the performance of journalists as they would put their reports with no objectivity.

Voice of labours came under heavy fire and rockets in November 2006. Militants loyalists to Hamas claimed responsibility.

Shireen Khalifa 25, works with Salam TV Production Company, in Gaza, said that this attack is not only against Alarabiya but also a strong message to other journalists and media bodies.

She said that the component of the message is putting "red lines" that the journalists should not cross them for the interest of a specific political power.

Khalifa mentioned that such act tries to turn the journalists to "bias loudspeakers".

Raed Abu Sitta 31, reporter of Al Majalla based in Riyadh, said that the attack reduces the activity of the journalists and a new difficulty on the shoulders of the reporters in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

"Such crimes, harms the justice of the Palestinian causes and the sacrifices of the Palestinian people among the international opinion." He concluded by saying that those who committed this crime are irresponsible groups.

On Monday night an explosion ripped through the office of Al Arabiya television in Gaza City.

Local witnesses said that an explosion torn apart the office of the TV Channel, causing no injuries.

Witnesses revealed that the newsroom was empty when the planted explosive device went off, adding that the explosion smashed the door of the office of Reuters News Agency across the hallway.

Al Arabiya employees had not arrived at work for several days because of anonymous telephone threats by unknown persons.
