Foreign ministry: settlers’ measures in Ibrahimi mosque a serious and unprecedented escalation

RAMALLAH, March 9, 2018 (WAFA) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Friday slammed Israeli settlers’ erection of tents in the yards of al-Ibrahimi mosque in Hebron as a serious and unprecedented escalation aimed at Judaizing the Ibrahimi Mosque and its surroundings and the Old City of Hebron.

The ministry in a statement condemned in the strongest terms settlers’ erection of tents in the yards of al-Ibrahimi mosque, stressing that such measures come as part of the occupation‘s measures aimed at committing the largest forced displacement of Palestinians from the Old City of Hebron.

The ministry held the Israeli government, headed by prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, fully and directly responsible for the continued attacks on Palestinian Muslim and Christian holy sites, slamming the latest settlers’ measures in al-Ibrahimi mosque as a flagrant violation of international law, international humanitarian law, Geneva conventions, and signed agreements.

The ministry affirmed that it will follow up on ‘this dangerous escalation’ with relevant UN organizations, calling for a prompt international intervention to provide the Palestinian people and their holy sites with protection.

It maintained that the absence of accountability encourages settlers to persist on committing crimes against the Palestinian people, their land, and holy sites.

The ministry said this unprecedented escalation calls for an awakening of international conscience and adopting binding measures to remove the tents immediately.
