RAMALLAH, October 8, 2026 (WAFA) — An Israeli military court in Salem on Thursday sentenced Palestinian prisoner Nazmi Abu Bakr, 55, from the town of Ya'bad, southwest of Jenin, to life imprisonment and ordered him to pay “compensation” of 4.5 million shekels.
Khaled Mahajneh, a lawyer with the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, said the sentence was issued nearly six years after Abu Bakr’s arrest, during which 85 court hearings were held.
The ruling brings the number of Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli prisons to 119, according to the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society.
The two institutions said Abu Bakr had been subjected to interrogation and torture at the al-Jalameh detention center following his arrest, denied access to his lawyer during the initial stage of interrogation, and placed in solitary confinement. They added that he had consistently denied the charge against him.
They said Abu Bakr’s case once again highlights what they described as the lack of fair-trial guarantees before Israeli military courts, and called for dismantling the military court system and holding Israel accountable for violations committed against Palestinian prisoners.
