Israel hands over body of Palestinian prisoner who died in custody

RAMALLAH, October 8, 2026 (WAFA) — Israeli authorities handed over on Thursday the body of Palestinian prisoner Marwan Fathi Harzallah, from Nablus’s al-Ein refugee camp, after holding his remains since his death in Israeli custody in March 2026.

Harzallah was detained in January 2026 on alleged charges of “incitement,” according to Israeli authorities, before they announced his death on March 28, 2026, inside Megiddo Prison.

Prisoner advocacy organizations confirmed that Harzallah’s death was a direct result of the policy of denying necessary medical treatment and healthcare. They held the Israeli authorities and prison administration fully responsible for his death amid systematic violations against Palestinian prisoners.

Following the handover of Herzallah’s body, the number of bodies of Palestinian prisoners who died in Israeli custody and remain withheld by Israeli authorities stands at 99, including 88 prisoners who died since the start of the genocidal war.

The bodies of prisoners who died in custody are part of a broader total of hundreds of Palestinian bodies still being withheld by Israeli authorities, while the fate of dozens of detainees from the Gaza Strip remains unknown.

Prisoner affairs institutions stressed that withholding the bodies of Palestinians who died in custody deprives their families of the right to know the fate of their loved ones, bid them farewell, and bury them with dignity. They said the practice constitutes a continuation of the violations committed against Palestinians even after death.

The institutions renewed their call on the international community to assume its responsibilities, work to end the policy of withholding bodies, disclose  the fate of all missing and detained Palestinians, and return the bodies of those who died to their families, allowing them to bury their loved ones with dignity and without conditions or restrictions.
