RAMALLAH, September 13, 2026 (WAFA) — The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs on Sunday confirmed the continued deterioration of detention, living and health conditions for Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli occupation’s Janot prison, amid escalating repression and searches, mistreatment, severe shortages of clothing and food, and medical neglect affecting sick prisoners.
The commission said in its report that prisoner Osama Fatahallah Al-Shenni, detained since 2024, suffers from a herniated disc in his back and underwent surgery for the condition in 2022. He is currently experiencing severe pain and deliberate medical neglect, with prison authorities refusing to provide him with painkillers.
According to Al-Shenni's testimony to the commission's lawyer, prison guards mistreat prisoners and conduct searches almost daily. He said prisoners face shortages of basic personal supplies and poor-quality food. Several prisoners in his section suffer from severe malnutrition, which has significantly affected their weight. Al-Shenni has lost 35 kilograms since his detention and has only two changes of clothes, while prisoners generally face a shortage of underwear.
The commission also reported on the case of prisoner Qassam Abdel Karim Shibli, who has been detained since 2019 and remains in detention. He was held at the Moscovia interrogation center for 78 days, then transferred to Ofer prison for two months and subsequently to Janot. The visit by the commission's lawyer was his first since October 7, 2023.
Shibli reported continued raids and repression targeting prisoners' rooms and sections. He said that on September 4, units of the Israeli prison forces raided several rooms, including his, firing rubber-coated bullets and tear gas and beating prisoners. Two prisoners were injured, while the detainees were not informed of the reasons for the raid.
Prisoner Fadi Ahmad Abu Al-Rub, detained since 2026 and still awaiting proceedings, told the commission's lawyer that prisoners are subjected to continued provocations and insults, alongside ongoing raids and searches of rooms and sections.
Regarding food, Abu Al-Rub said prisoners are losing weight as a result of a systematic starvation policy in Israeli prisons. He said he has lost 15 kilograms since his detention.
The commission also reported that Ashraf Mohammad Al-Zaghari, detained since 2022, remains in detention and suffers from injuries sustained before his detention, including gunshot wounds to both knees, with shrapnel still lodged in his body. He also sustained an injury to his left ear during a repression operation at Ofer prison around a year and a half ago.
Al-Zaghari said he has since suffered pain, hearing loss and ringing in his head, alongside deliberate medical neglect and extremely poor detention conditions, including shortages of personal supplies, repression, insults and poor-quality food.
