RAMALLAH, August 9, 2026 (WAFA) — The Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs said Sunday that Israeli prison authorities had confirmed the death of Palestinian detainee Ihab Mohammad Abdul Qader Diab, 36, from the Gaza Strip, who had been imprisoned since December 12, 2023.
In a statement, the commission said it received a response from the Israeli Prison Service confirming Diab's death. The response claimed that he had suffered from a health condition, a claim his family rejected, saying he was healthy and had no illnesses when he was detained. The commission said his death is believed to have occurred on September 18, 2024.
The commission said Diab's death brings the number of Palestinian detainees who have died in Israeli custody since 1967 to 328, including 91 since October 7, 2023, among them 53 from Gaza.
The commission called for immediate international intervention to end the policy of torture and abuse in Israeli prisons and detention centers, saying dozens of Palestinians, particularly those detained from Gaza, are believed to have died as a result of torture.
It said numerous testimonies document detainees dying under torture, while Israeli authorities have yet to acknowledge many of these deaths and continue a policy of enforced disappearance and concealment.
The commission said his death was part of a continuing pattern of deliberate killings of Palestinians in Israeli detention.
