Israel's Netanyahu and Katz order attacks on Beirut's southern suburbs

BEIRUT, June 1, 2026 (WAFA) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz on Monday morning ordered attacks on Beirut's southern suburbs amid continued escalation and an expansion of ground operations in southern Lebanon.

The southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, have seen a large-scale displacement of residents following Israeli threats to launch strikes on the area, prompting many people to leave as a precautionary measure.

In the latest developments, Lebanon's Ministry of Health said an Israeli airstrike targeted the town of Deir al-Zahrani in the Nabatieh district, killing eight people, including three women, and wounding 19 others, among them five children and six women.

According to Lebanon's National News Agency, two people were killed on Monday morning when a drone strike targeted their vehicle in the southern town of Briqaa. A Syrian man was also killed in a strike near Sheikh Ragheb Harb Hospital in Toul, while another drone carried out a strike on the town of Nabatieh al-Fawqa.

The towns of Harouf and Choukine were also targeted by Israeli airstrikes on Monday morning. Overnight raids on the town of Kfarsir killed three Lebanese citizens.
