Israeli occupation forces close Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron

HEBRON, May 29, 2026 (WAFA) - Israeli occupation forces on Friday closed the Ibrahimi Mosque in the southern occupied West Bank city of Hebron until further notice.

According to officials at the mosque, Israeli forces forced guards, employees, worshippers and custodians to leave the site before sealing it off completely.

Acting director of the Ibrahimi Mosque, Hammam Abu Markhia, described the closure as a provocative assault on Muslims’ right to access their place of worship.

Israeli forces also tightened military restrictions around the mosque, shutting all checkpoints and electronic gates leading to the holy site.

In a statement, the Palestinian Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs condemned the closure, describing it as a serious violation of freedom of worship and a direct attack on Muslims’ right to access their holy sites.

The ministry said the move reflects Israel’s ongoing policy of undermining the historic and religious status quo at the Ibrahimi Mosque, and warned of the dangerous consequences of continued violations aimed at imposing a new reality at the site.

It called on international and human rights organizations to take immediate action to stop such practices and ensure the mosque is reopened to worshippers without restrictions.
