Palestinian detainee Marwan Harzallah dies in Israeli prison

NABLUS, March 28, 2026 (WAFA) – The Palestinian Prisoners and Freed Prisoners Affairs Authority and the Palestinian Prisoners Society reported on Saturday the death of the injured Palestinian detainee Marwan Fathi Harzallah in the Israeli Megiddo prison.

In a joint statement, the two organizations said Harzallah was detained on January 8, 2026, and remained imprisoned on charges of what the Israeli occupation claims as “incitement.” He had previously been shot by Israeli forces in 1995, resulting in the amputation of one of his legs. Harzallah also had a son, Tahrir Harzallah, who is currently held under administrative detention.

Harzallah is among more than 100 Palestinian detainees who have died in Israeli prisons and detention centers since the start of what Palestinian authorities describe as a genocidal campaign, with the identities of 89 of the victims confirmed so far.

The statement pointed out that these deaths resulted from widespread torture, systematic starvation, medical negligence, sexual assaults, and a range of other abuses, including deprivation, humiliation, and inhumane detention conditions.

His death coincides with Israeli efforts to pass legislation that would legalize the execution of Palestinian detainees, formalizing a practice previously carried out extrajudicially.

With Harzallah's death, the total number of Palestinian prisoners whose identities have been confirmed as martyrs since 1967 rises to 326.

Many detainees from Gaza remain subjected to enforced disappearance, and dozens have been executed in the field. Photos of the bodies handed over after the ceasefire have served as evidence of systematic extrajudicial killings by the Israeli military.

The Palestinian Prisoners and Freed Prisoners Affairs Authority and the Prisoners Society held Israeli authorities fully responsible for Harzallah's death and called on international human rights bodies to take urgent and effective measures to hold Israeli leaders accountable for war crimes committed against Palestinian detainees and civilians, ending decades of impunity.
