Israel to release 90 Palestinian prisoners as part of Gaza ceasefire agreement

RAMALLAH, January 31, 2025 (WAFA) – The Palestinian Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners Society announced today that 90 Palestinian prisoners are scheduled for release from Israeli prisons tomorrow, Saturday, as part of the fourth phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

In a joint statement, the two organizations confirmed that the release will include 81 prisoners serving long-term sentences and nine others sentenced to life imprisonment.

This release follows the third phase of prisoner releases under the Gaza ceasefire deal, which took place last night. In that phase, Israeli occupation authorities freed 110 detainees, including 32 prisoners serving life sentences, 48 with various sentences, and 30 minors.

The current ceasefire in Gaza is part of an internationally mediated agreement aimed at ending Israel's 470-day onslaught on Gaza. The truce, which has been implemented in phases, includes provisions for prisoner exchanges, humanitarian aid deliveries, and discussions on long-term de-escalation efforts.

This ceasefire follows 16 months of Israeli genocide, which resulted in significant casualties and widespread destruction. Diplomatic efforts by regional and international actors played a crucial role in brokering the agreement, with a focus on preventing further violence and alleviating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

One of the key components of the agreement is the phased release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli detention. Additionally, the ceasefire includes mechanisms to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, addressing urgent needs such as medical supplies, food, and shelter for displaced civilians.
