NEW YORK, January 30, 2025 (WAFA) – The United Nations has called on Israel to reverse its decision to terminate the operations of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
The UN Office for Human Rights issued a statement on the social media platform X, addressing the enforcement of Israel’s ban on UNRWA activities.
The statement emphasized the severe impact the decision would have on essential services, including food distribution, healthcare, and education in the occupied Palestinian territories. It also warned of serious human rights consequences for tens of thousands of Palestinians.
The UN office urged the Israeli government to repeal the law passed by the Knesset, which restricts the agency’s fundamental operations.
As a result of the ban, the Israeli government has effectively ended UNRWA’s operations in Israel and occupied East Jerusalem. International staff members of the agency have left East Jerusalem as their Israeli permits expired, while local employees did not report to UNRWA offices.
The decision has sparked international criticism, with humanitarian organizations warning of the negative repercussions on Palestinian refugees who rely on the agency’s services.
