President Abbas receives Chinese Middle East Envoy in Ramallah, affirms readiness to assume full responsibility in Gaza

RAMALLAH, January 18, 2025 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas met today with Chinese Middle East Special Envoy, Zhai Jun, and his accompanying delegation in Ramallah, where he affirmed the readiness of the State of Palestine to assume full responsibility in the Gaza Strip.

President Abbas warmly welcomed the Chinese delegation, expressing his gratitude for China's continued support of Palestinian rights in international forums. He emphasized the deep historical ties between the two countries and peoples, offering special thanks to President Xi Jinping for his efforts to strengthen the strategic relationship between Palestine and China.

The President also acknowledged China's humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, which continues to provide vital support.

During the meeting, President Abbas reiterated Palestine's firm position, calling for an immediate ceasefire and a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. He stressed the necessity for Palestine to take full responsibility for Gaza, as it is an integral part of the occupied Palestinian territories.

The President also called for an end to Israeli violations in the West Bank, including Jerusalem, and for a halt to all forms of settlement expansion and settler crimes, as well as the protection of Islamic and Christian holy sites.

Furthermore, President Abbas reaffirmed the readiness of the Palestinian government and its civil and security institutions to assume full responsibility in Gaza. This aims to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people, facilitate the return of displaced people to their homes, restore essential services such as water and electricity, and manage border crossings for reconstruction efforts.

He also emphasized the urgency of delivering humanitarian aid from donor countries and international organizations in coordination with the Palestinian government, which is prepared to deploy teams for the distribution of assistance and the restoration of essential services in preparation for reconstruction.

The President underscored the important role China could play in a proposed international peace conference. The goal of such a conference would be to gain international recognition of the State of Palestine and secure full membership in the United Nations, to advance the two-state solution, and to bring lasting peace and security to the region.

He said such a conference would culminate in the end of the Israeli occupation and the establishment of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with international resolutions and law.
