MEXICO CITY, Thursday, May 16, 2024 (WAFA) - On the 76th anniversary of the Nakba, the Government of Mexico expressed in a statement its solidarity with the people of Palestine and reiterated its call for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the full restoration of humanitarian aid flows to alleviate the suffering of the innocent civilian population and progress towards the establishment of two States.
"Continuing the highest values of our exceptional and fruitful history, Mexico commemorates the Nakba of the Palestinian people, the exodus of more than 700,000 people caused by the 1948 Arab-Israeli war," the statement said.
"Mexico became an independent nation pursuing ideals of equality, freedom and justice. These ideals became our foreign policy principles, which have served to defend our sovereignty, our territorial integrity and our interests. Today, Mexico reiterates that the self-determination of peoples, peaceful settlement of disputes and respect for international law, especially territorial integrity, are basic principles of coexistence among nations and the only path to lasting peace."
"In view of the escalation of violence, it is important to denounce the unacceptable situation in Gaza. Mexico has defended the political, social and territorial rights of the Palestinians in multilateral, regional and bilateral forums. On several occasions, we have asked the UN Security Council to act regarding the violations of international law that are accumulating in the Palestinian territories. Like Palestine, Mexico has experience with walls and border crossings that separate, dehumanize and exclude," the statement added.
"Along with the majority of the UN Member States, Mexico shares the desire to promote a global dialogue on the Palestinian question and its recognition as a UN Member State, an essential step on the path towards a two-State solution. Mexico recalls that different peoples and faiths have coexisted respectfully and closely for centuries in the Eastern Mediterranean. Our country will continue to believe in the possibility of restoring peace and harmony in the region."
Many countries such Qatar, Brazil, Argentina and Sri Lanka commemorated the 76th anniversary of the Nakba through events, exhibitions, and speeches, affirming the right of return for Palestinian refugees, the right to self-determination, and the right of Palestinians to live on their land.
