RAMALLAH, Thursday, May 9, 2024 (WAFA) – The Prisoners’ Affairs Commission (PAC) and the Palestine Prisoner’s Society (PPS) today held the Israeli Prison Administration responsible for the fate of a severely tortured prisoner.
PAC and PPS held the Israeli Prison Administration (IPA) responsible for the fate of 59-year-old Ibrahim Hamed, a resident of the Ramallah district town of Silwad, following the initial testimonies of a prisoner in the highly fortified Israeli Gilboa Prison that Hamed was subjected to horrific torture.
Hamed was arrested several times, and the last time he was arrested was in 2006 when he was sentenced to 54 life sentences.
The prisoner, whose name remained unidentified, was quoted as saying, “Hamed was assaulted on Wednesday in the Gilboa Prison, and all parts of his body sustained bruises, scratches or cuts and his head bled profusely.”
“Following the assault, I left him unable to stand on his feet by himself, suffering from very serious health condition. No matter how I attempt to describe his health condition, it would not be described. His life and the lives of other detainees are at serious risk due to brutal torture in the Gilboa Prison,” he added.
The PAC and PPS added that the horrifying details of the torture inflicted on Hamed were part of the testimonies they documented of prisoners released after October 7 and following the over-seven-month-long Israeli genocidal war on Gaza, which saw the killing of 18 prisoners in Israeli jails and army camps let apart the anonymous Gazan prisoners killed in army camps.
The details of the shocking level of torture recounted in the prisoners’ testimonies, PAC and PPS added, indicate that it is likely that more prisoners would be killed in Israeli jails due to cruel treatment and starvation.
They considered what happened with Hamed attempted murder, pointing out that all the decades-long measures taken against prisoners are systematic.
They urged international human rights organizations to open an independent international investigation given the escalating Israeli crimes and genocidal onslaught against the Gaza Strip and ensure an end to unprecedented crimes against prisoners.
