CAIRO, Saturday, October 21, 2023 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas met today with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, and discussed with them the latest developments in Palestine and the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
On the sidelines of the Cairo Peace Summit, hosted by Egypt, the President discussed with the EU leaders the latest developments in Palestine and the ongoing efforts to halt the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, protect civilians from the perils of war, and ensure the urgent delivery of medical and food relief supplies, as well as access to water and electricity, to the people of Gaza.
President Abbas reiterated Palestine's firm rejection of any forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, the West Bank, or Jerusalem.
He emphasized that peace and security can only be achieved through the implementation of the two-state solution based on international legitimacy resolutions, which call for the recognition of the State of Palestine on the all of the territories of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip.
President Abbas expressed his gratitude to Spain for its supportive stance for a political solution based on the two-state framework and international legitimacy. He also acknowledged Spain's contribution in terms of developmental aid and institution building in Palestine.
The meeting was attended by the Secretary-General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Hussein al-Sheikh, and the President's Diplomatic Affairs Advisor, Majdi al-Khaldi.
