Newspapers Review: Dailies Highlight Abbas’ Statements on Al-Aqsa

RAMALLAH, May 13, 2013 (WAFA) – Two of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted on their Monday issue front page statements on Jerusalem and al-Aqsa Mosque President Mahmoud Abbas made during a meeting for the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

The headline that went across the front page of al-Hayat al-Jadida and on half of the page of al-Ayyam quoted Abbas saying: “We will not remain quiet to what is happening to al-Aqsa Mosque.”

The main front page story in the third paper, al-Quds, reported on a decision by the Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem to demolish 11 homes in three East Jerusalem neighborhoods.

Al-Quds also said that Israeli settlers flooded land in Nabi Samuel, a Palestinian village west of Jerusalem, with sewage water and prevented farmers in al-Khader from reaching their land.

The paper said in a different story that Fatah and Hamas are planning to meet in Cairo on Tuesday to discuss the unity government and reconciliation.

Al-Ayyam quoted the Egyptian ambassador to Palestine saying that Abbas’ visit to Cairo this week is an important step toward implementing the reconciliation agreement.

It also reported on a statement by the Christian churches in Jerusalem condemning Israeli police’s violence against Christians during Easter celebration.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on their front page on the visit to Ramallah and meeting with Abbas of the head Israeli Labor party Shelly Yachimovich. They quoted her saying that Abbas could be the last Palestinian leader Israel could talk to.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted in a story Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi saying that no change was introduced to any word or item in the Arab Peace Initiative.

Al-Ayyam printed a story about the Palestinian group, With Dignity, that works on easing and facilitating travel conditions across King Hussein (Allenby) bridge with Jordan.
