Erekat Denies Quartet Proposal of Palestinian-Israeli Meeting in Jordan

RAMALLAH, October 12, 2011 (WAFA) – PLO Executive Committee Member, Saeb Erekat, Wednesday denied reports that the Quartet has proposed a meeting between the Palestinians and Israelis in Jordan later this month.

Erekat, speaking to Voice of Palestine radio, said the Quartet contacted the Palestinian leadership and denied statements by US State Department spokesperson, Victoria Nuland, announcing the proposed meeting between both sides.

President Mahmoud Abbas will meet with US Middle East Peace Envoy, David Hale, and senior White House official, Dennis Ross, following Abbas’ arrival in Paris on Thursday, added Erekat.

He indicated intensive discussions between the Quartet members, the US, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations on resuming the Palestinian-Israeli peace talks.

In addition, Abbas reaffirmed the Palestinian position that there is no contradiction between a full United Nations membership of a Palestinian state and resuming negotiations, if Israel agrees to the halting of settlement activities and to the two-state solution based on 1967 borders, added Erekat.
