BERNAMA: 30 Malaysian Doctors among 55 Volunteers on Gaza Mission during Ramadan

KUALA LUMPUR, July 26, 2010 (WAFA-  Fifty-five volunteers, among them a multi-racial team of 30 medical specialists and officers, are to go on a 13-day humanitarian mission organised by the 1Malaysia Putera Club to Israel-occupied Gaza during the coming Ramadan fasting month, BERNAMA news agency reported.

Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, wife of the Malaysian PM, said on Monday 10 journalists would also join the mission, to provide aid to the citizens in Gaza, from Aug 8 to 20.

'I am proud that a multi-racial team of medical specialists and officers is also participating in the mission and I am thankful to them,' she told reporters after a briefing on the mission organised by the 1Malaysia Putera Club and the Malaysian Red Crescent Society at Rosmah's residence, here.

Rosmah said the mission reflected the sensitivity of Malaysians in feeling for the plight of the citizens of Gaza.

The mission is to be headed by Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim, who is president of the 1Malaysia Putera Club.

Rosmah said the team of 30 medical specialists and officers comprised 10 Malays, 10 Chinese and 10 Indians, and reflected the spirit of 1Malaysia.

Abdul Azeez said the medical team, which also included orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons and psychiatrists, would be deployed to five hospitals, including the Al-Quds Hospital, to help the local doctors handle the trauma patients, many of them children and the elderly.

He said the 30 doctors were selected from a list of 173 who had registered to be volunteers for the mission.

A report would be presented to Rosmah on the mission and more to come, he said.

Abdul Azeez said medical, clothing and food aid would be distributed to 1,000 families.

The Palestinian ambassador to Malaysia, Abdel Aziz Abu Ghoush, and Malaysian Red Crescent Society vice-chairman Datuk Dr Bahari Abu Mansor, who is also advisor of the mission, were present at the event.
