Vice President Al-Sheikh discusses developments in Palestine and legislative elections with EU High Representative

RAMALLAH, October 6, 2026 (WAFA) – Vice President of the State of Palestine Hussein Al-Sheikh today held a phone call with Kaja Kallas, Vice President of the European Commission and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The two discussed the latest political and field developments, the situation in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, and preparations for the Palestinian legislative elections scheduled for November.

During the call, Al-Sheikh reviewed the ongoing crimes committed by Israeli colonists and systematic violations in the West Bank, highlighting the deterioration of the security and humanitarian situations. He also addressed the dire and catastrophic conditions in the Gaza Strip, stressing the urgent need for sustained international efforts to deliver relief and aid to the Palestinian people.

Al-Sheikh expressed his appreciation for the European Union’s consistent positions on the Palestinian cause, as well as its continued efforts to provide aid to the Gaza Strip. He emphasized the importance of continued European support during these challenging times and called on the EU to assist Palestinian efforts to overcome any obstacles that could disrupt the elections. He noted that such support is crucial to ensuring that all Palestinians across the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip can fully participate in the electoral process.

For her part, Kallas affirmed the European Union’s readiness to deploy an election observation mission to monitor the Palestinian legislative elections scheduled for November. She stressed the importance of holding credible, inclusive, and transparent elections, noting that this step aligns with the publicly declared European position in support of the Palestinian legislative elections.
