Iceland board votes against Eurovision 2027 participation if Israel remains

RAMALLAH, October 1, 2026 (WAFA) — Six of the nine members of the Icelandic public broadcaster RÚV’s board voted in favor of not participating in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest unless Israel is barred from taking part.

The six board members instructed RÚV’s director to inform the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) that Iceland will not participate in the contest if Israel remains in the competition, renewing their previous call for Israel’s exclusion.

RÚV Board Chairman Stefán Jón Hafstein said the majority of board members had not changed their position, noting that, in his view, the EBU had not taken a substantive position on the demand to exclude Israel.

“Six board members remain in the same position they were in at the end of last year,” he said.

Iceland boycotted the 2026 edition of the contest, along with several other countries, in protest against Israel’s continued participation. Ireland has already announced that it will not participate in the 2027 contest, while Spain and Slovenia have yet to make final decisions. The Netherlands, meanwhile, has decided to return to the competition.

The 2027 Eurovision Song Contest is scheduled to take place in the Bulgarian city of Burgas in May next year.
