Campaign urges Ireland football team to boycott Israel match in solidarity with Palestine

RAMALLAH, Ocrober 1, 2026 (WAFA) — The “Stop the Game” campaign has called on the Republic of Ireland national football team and its Icelandic coach, Heimir Hallgrímsson, to boycott the return fixture against Israel, scheduled for Sunday in the third round of the UEFA Nations League, in solidarity with Palestine.

According to the Irish Sun, the campaign sent a letter to the coach and players, signed by a number of League of Ireland supporters, urging them not to take part in the match, which is due to be held in Serbia.

The campaign called on the players to stand with their teammates and the Irish people, arguing that participating in the match would contradict the views of the majority of Irish citizens. It cited opinion polls that it said showed more than 70% of people in Ireland opposed to the two fixtures being held.

The letter also referred to Ireland’s position on Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip, noting that the Irish government supports international legal proceedings and that Dublin has joined South Africa in the case before the International Court of Justice concerning allegations of genocide.
