CAPITALS, August 2, 2026 (WAFA) — Concerns over a potential renewed confrontation with Iran eased after US President Donald Trump announced the cancellation of a planned strike on Tehran, saying the decision followed requests from Iran and other regional countries to suspend any military action and allow room for reaching the outlines of a potential agreement.
Trump made the announcement on the 46th day since the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran and 155 days after the outbreak of the war, linking the cancellation of the strike to the need to accelerate efforts to finalize the anticipated deal.
Trump said the possible agreement includes the immediate and full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and ending what he described as the “Iranian nuclear threat,” adding that Israel would be part of the commitment.
The decision came hours after growing assessments that attacks could resume soon, amid security warnings issued by several US embassies in the region advising American citizens of the possibility of “unexpected escalation” and urging them to consider leaving or prepare to do so.
US diplomatic missions in Amman, Jerusalem, Muscat, Baghdad, and Beirut issued a joint security alert, coinciding with reports of US and Israeli preparations for possible new strikes against targets inside Iran.
US media also reported, citing officials, that Washington and Israel had been preparing for what could be one of the largest bombing campaigns against Iranian energy infrastructure and facilities, with operations potentially beginning over the weekend.
