Palestinian infant dies at Israeli army checkpoint near Ramallah

RAMALLAH, July 5, 2026 (WAFA) – A four-month-old Palestinian infant died on Sunday evening after Israeli occupation forces blocked his urgent medical transfer through a military checkpoint at the entrance to the village of Deir Ammar, west of Ramallah, according to Ramallah and Al-Bireh Governor Laila Ghannam.

She reported doctors at the Arab Specialized Hospital confirming the death of Ahmad Marouf Zeid after Israeli occupation forces prevented him from passing through the Deir Ammar checkpoint despite his critical medical condition that required urgent transfer for treatment.

In a post on her Facebook page, Ghannam said Zeid, who was on his way to receive medical treatment, was prevented by Israeli occupation soldiers from reaching the hospital despite his critical condition. She added that the soldiers also fired tear gas canisters at residents and vehicles, depriving the child of timely access to medical care, after which he died.

She added that what happened to Ahmad, the family's only son, who was born after years of waiting, is "a stain on the conscience of humanity." She added that the incident is part of what she described as an Israeli policy implemented through military checkpoints, gates, and closures aimed at obstructing the movement of civilians, patients, and ambulances, in violation of fundamental rights, foremost among them the rights to life, freedom of movement, and access to medical care.
