CAIRO, July 1, 2026 (WAFA) – The new Secretary-General of the Arab League, Nabil Fahmy, officially assumed his duties on Wednesday during a handover ceremony held at the General Secretariat headquarters of the League in Cairo.
Fahmy succeeded former Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, whose term has ended, in the presence of several assistant secretaries-general and senior officials of the General Secretariat.
Following the ceremony, Fahmy received briefings from General Secretariat officials on the latest political developments and held a meeting with assistant secretaries-general to discuss priorities for the coming phase and working mechanisms across the League’s various sectors.
The new Secretary-General also signed his first official correspondence addressed to Arab leaders, expressing his gratitude for the confidence placed in him.
He further sent letters to Arab foreign ministers outlining an assessment of the current situation in the Arab world, along with proposals aimed at strengthening the role of the Arab League, enhancing its performance, enabling it to address current challenges, and supporting development as well as economic and social advancement across the Arab world.
