President of PNC: Preparations under way to complete election of Palestinian National Council members in diaspora countries

RAMALLAH, June 23, 2026 (WAFA) – President of the Palestinian National Council Rawhi Fattouh said on Tuesday that directives were issued, on behalf of the Follow-up Committee for the elections of the Palestinian National Council, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, to Palestinian embassies to begin the necessary preparations in accordance with the regulations governing the elections of the Palestinian National Council, ahead of the arrival of delegations tasked with completing the process of selecting members of the Council in diaspora countries.

He noted that the committee, in its latest meeting chaired by Vice President of the State of Palestine and head of the Follow-up Committee for the Palestinian National Council elections, Hussein al-Sheikh, decided to proceed directly with the selection of members of the Palestinian National Council in the diaspora.

Fattouh explained that the process of selecting members of the Council abroad will take place through several tracks, beginning with direct elections for Palestinian communities in countries where such elections are possible. He added that embassies will prepare voter registers within one week, followed by the opening of nominations, with elections to be held two weeks after the end of the nomination period.

He pointed out that if direct elections cannot be held, the electoral college system will be applied in accordance with the provisions of the Palestinian National Council election regulations, whereby the electoral college will be formed and elections held in the week following its formation.

He added that in cases where elections cannot be held, or an electoral college cannot be formed, recourse will be made to consensus in line with the approved regulations governing the Palestinian National Council elections.
