In support of Palestine, Mayor of New York to skip annual Israel Day Parade

NEW YORK, May 31, 2026 (WAFA) – New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced that he will not take part in the annual Israel Day Parade on Sunday, departing from a long-standing political tradition due to his support for Palestinian rights.

Although the event has been held under different names over the years, the parade has traditionally drawn mayors, governors, and other political figures seeking to demonstrate support for Israel and its allies in the United States.

Thousands of participants typically gather along Fifth Avenue to commemorate the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.

Mamdani has adopted a different approach. Two weeks ago, the New York City Mayor’s Office released a video marking the Nakba.

At a press conference on Thursday, Mamdani said he had made his position clear during the election campaign, stating that he would not participate in the parade and had been explicit about his views on the Israeli government.
