BARCELONA, November 28, 2025 (WAFA) – Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares on Friday called for the implementation of the two-state solution to achieve a lasting peace in the Middle East.
This came during his speech at the 10th Regional Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean, held in the Spanish city of Barcelona.
Albares stressed that a just and durable peace in the Middle East can only be achieved through the two-state solution, saying that the time has come to end all this suffering and build a lasting peace.
He added that the US peace plan, together with UN Security Council Resolution 2803 endorsing it, provides a roadmap for implementing the two-state solution, stressing that it is the only viable alternative to restore peace and security for all peoples of the Middle East.
Meanwhile, during his address, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said the war endured by the Palestinian people over the past two years has been the most severe since the 1948 Nakba, warning that the continued Israeli occupation remains “a recipe for sustained violence and regional instability.”
Aboul Gheit said the Israeli occupation has caused the killing of more than 69,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, and has destroyed an entire society by targeting infrastructure and institutions and depriving Palestinians of normal life. He added that Israel continues to obstruct efforts to secure a ceasefire, facilitate the entry of aid, and advance reconstruction.
He stressed that the goal is not merely to halt the fire, but to reach a permanent settlement and realize an independent Palestinian state, considering international recognition of the State of Palestine a pivotal step to reinforce prospects for peace and stability.
