Palestinian diplomat welcomes UK government’s decision to sanction Israeli ministers

LONDON, June 10, 2025 (WAFA) – Palestinian ambassador to the UK Husam Zomlot welcomed on Tuesday the UK government’s decision to sanction Israel's violently extremist Jewish supremacist ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich.

“We welcome the UK Government’s decision to impose sanctions on Israeli ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich. This is a long-overdue and necessary step towards advancing justice and accountability,” Zomlot posted on X.

“While these individual designations are a significant step forward, the Israeli government, led by a Prime Minister wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes, remains free from accountability,” he added.

He therefore called on the UK to “implement government-wide sanctions and a full arms embargo against the Government of Israel, in line with international and UK laws, including the ICJ Advisory Opinion of July 2024.”

“Finally, today’s announcement, while welcomed, must be accompanied by—not a substitute for— the fulfilment of the UK Government’s promises to support the self-determination of the Palestinian people,” he concluded, while calling “once again for the government to recognise the state of Palestine at the UN next week.”
