VALLETTA, May 25, 2025 (WAFA) - Malta’s Prime Minister, Robert Abela, announced that Malta will recognize the State of Palestine during the coming month, marking the end of a 45-year national debate on the issue.
Abela described the situation in Gaza as an escalating human tragedy, stating, "We cannot close our eyes to this human tragedy that is getting worse every day." He highlighted that more than 50,000 people have been killed due to the Israeli aggression.
The announcement was made during a political event on Sunday, where Abela addressed both local and international issues, placing particular emphasis on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The recognition of Palestine will take place following the peace conference on 20 June, said the German Prime Minister. Abela stated the move is a moral responsibility, considering the worsening humanitarian situation in the region.
