President Abbas meets Russia’s Grand Mufti in Moscow

MOSCOW, May 10, 2025 (WAFA) — President Mahmoud Abbas met today with Russia’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Rawil Ğaynetdin, and a delegation from the Russian Council of Muftis, on the sidelines of commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazism, hosted in the Russian capital, Moscow.

President Abbas expressed his gratitude to Sheikh Ğaynetdin and the accompanying delegation for their unwavering support of the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights. He also reaffirmed his full support for the Muslim community in Russia.

During the meeting, President Abbas briefed the Grand Mufti on the latest developments in Palestine, particularly the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip and the genocidal war against the Palestinian people. He also highlighted the severe blockade imposed on the people of Gaza, which has prevented the entry of essential goods including food, water, medicine, and fuel.

President Abbas also discussed the continuous Israeli violations against Islamic and Christian holy sites, especially in occupied Jerusalem.

In response, Sheikh Ğaynetdin thanked President Abbas for his consistent and supportive stance toward Russian Muslims. As a token of appreciation, the Grand Mufti presented President Abbas with a rare copy of the Uthmanic Quran.

The President arrived in Moscow on Thursday at the official invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin to participate in the 80th anniversary commemorations of the victory over Nazism.
