President Abbas chairs PLO Executive Committee meeting; Azzam al-Ahmad elected as Secretary-General

RAMALLAH, May 3, 2025 (WAFA) — President Mahmoud Abbas chaired a meeting of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO)’s Executive Committee on Saturday evening at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah.

At the start of the session, committee members unanimously elected Executive Committee member Azzam al-Ahmad as Secretary-General of the PLO Executive Committee.

President Abbas presented a detailed briefing on the ongoing political and diplomatic efforts being undertaken by the Palestinian leadership to stop the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in Gaza, the West Bank, and occupied East Jerusalem. He also addressed the urgent need to lift the siege on Gaza and facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid, including essential food and medical supplies.

The President updated the committee on recent progress in implementing institutional reforms across various sectors, including security and economic development, aimed at strengthening national resilience in the face of current threats.

The committee warned of growing chaos in Gaza, pointing to armed groups engaging in the looting of food and medical supplies, which it said only serves the interests of the Israeli occupation as it continues its massacres of innocent civilians and assaults on hospitals and civilian infrastructure.

The Executive Committee approved measures to hold accountable all individuals and groups engaged in unlawful actions, in accordance with the laws of the State of Palestine, and in coordination with national institutions and civil society.

The committee also discussed the financial crisis facing UNRWA, as several donor countries have suspended contributions, severely impacting the agency’s ability to provide vital educational and health services in its five areas of operation.

In response to ongoing Israeli military incursions into Palestinian territories—particularly in northern West Bank towns and refugee camps, as well as the Jordan Valley—the committee endorsed a special action program to counter forced displacement and the de facto annexation of land by Israeli authorities.

The committee also discussed the preparations for the upcoming international conference at the United Nations headquarters in New York this June. The summit, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France, aims to mobilize global efforts to implement UN resolutions on the Palestinian issue and advance the realization of an independent State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The committee concluded the session by approving a set of decisions to activate the work of various PLO departments and emphasized the importance of holding regular meetings.

President Abbas stressed the urgent need for the National Dialogue Committee—comprising members of the PLO Executive Committee and Fatah Central Committee—to begin its work without delay.

A special subcommittee was also formed to develop a phased action plan, involving several Executive Committee members.
