UN Special Rapporteur on Torture calls for investigations into deaths of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons

New York, March 14, 2025 (WAFA) – The UN Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, Alice Jill Edwards, has urged for an expedited investigation into the deaths of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons.

Speaking to journalists in Geneva on the sidelines of the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council, which convened last week and runs until April 4, Edwards criticized the maltreatment of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons.

She noted that enforcing the ceasefire agreement in Gaza was a positive development while condemning the maltreatment of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons, particularly after October 7, 2023.

She said that many detainees released under the exchange agreement had been arbitrarily detained and endured severe conditions during their captivity.

Describing the condition of the released detainees, she highlighted their frailty and deteriorating health, emphasizing the need for independent and impartial investigations into torture.
